Get Over the Hedge

Hedge funds are to the modern stock market as sunspots were to electronics in the 1960s: a convenient scapegoat when things go wrong without an evident cause. But they probably aren’t to blame for last week’s poor showing on Wall Street, and rumors of the industry’s demise are likely premature.

There has been speculation that funds are currently under pressure to sell stocks because Saturday was 45 days from the end of the year. Traditionally, some hedge funds have given their shareholders a month and a half to make their intentions of annual sales known.
