How Family Offices Are Protecting Their Art From Being Stolen

by Theo Johns

The art market does a great job of presenting itself as pristine, distinguished, and exclusive. The truth, as it often does, reveals a more complex landscape. As noted in FON News’ recent article, “Family Offices Investing in Art 2025,” art is becoming an increasingly prominent asset class for family offices and high-net-worth individuals. However, with this growing interest comes a need to confront some harsh realities that many collectors—and the institutions managing their collections—have either neglected to face or willfully ignored.

The Reality Behind the Canvas

Beneath the surface of a rising market lie significant challenges that collectors and institutions grapple with daily:

  • Inventory Nightmares: It’s not uncommon for artworks to be misplaced or lost for months at a time due to inefficient,  pen-and-paper tracking systems. Many art storage warehouses look like the final scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
  • Opaque Provenance: The art world often operates on highly curated stories rather than verifiable data, leaving buyers exposed to risks of fakes, fraud, and even stolen goods.
  • Uncertain Attribution: Terms like “attributed to” or “circle of” reflect the industry’s reliance on outdated, subjective methods to establish authorship. What is considered good today may not be tomorrow.
  • Overlooked Health: Condition reports are often “revised” to be client facing, omit key restoration details, and fail to account for long-term environmental and value risks.
  • Security Gaps: Many valuable collections rely solely on home security systems with no specialized protection or monitoring in place.

Simply put, the art market relies too heavily on traditional methods rather than utilizing the possibilities created by a modern, data-driven world.

Art Security Is Not What You See in the Movies

Spend any amount of time behind the scenes, and you’ll quickly realize the majority of art is not secure at all. Even a cursory search of the term “art theft” reveals some frightening headlines:

“British Museum Worker Sacked Over Missing Treasures”

“FBI Investigates Basquiat Paintings Shown at Orlando Museum of Art”

Hollywood certainly has a high opinion of art security with its cliché scenes of acrobatic bank robbers dodging an array of criss-crossed lasers to steal the Mona Lisa. But sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. In reality, most of the world’s most prestigious museums lack anything beyond an underpaid security guard.

Luckily for all of us, this is rapidly changing  through the use of cheap and reliable technology which has surprisingly been around in different forms for over 30 years. It only took a few tech nerds with a passion for art to see that there was an inexpensive and convenient solution waiting to be utilized.

The Cost of Complacency

For family offices and collectors, the stakes are high. Art is increasingly seen as an investment vehicle, but without adequate infrastructure, it remains a vulnerable one. What happens if you generously loan a coveted piece of your collection for an upcoming exhibition, and it turns up damaged in transit? ? Can you easily prove ownership in the event of theft? Are your artworks being properly monitored for environmental risks like humidity or temperature?

The answers to these questions provide little reassurance; many collectors are flying blind, relying on 19th- and 20th-century practices to manage 21st-century portfolios.

Art Can Be a Good Investment in spite of the Risks

Fortunately for collectors and institutions, specialized technology companies are transforming the industry with modern, reliable technologies. By combining reliable data, AI, RFID, and blockchain, this new art/tech community is creating a new infrastructure necessary to safeguard collections and bring transparency to the art market.

  • Tracking and Monitoring: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technologies ensure precise inventory management and real-time location tracking. (existing examples include  security in retail stores, embedded tech in high-end fashion and hand bags, and identification found in passports and touchless payment methods)
  • Immutable Provenance: Blockchain technology is currently being decoupled from the problematic world of Cryptocurrency. For our purposes, it can be appropriated to provide  an unalterable record of an artwork’s history, establishing trust in authenticity. , Imagine a completely secure online ledger that protects your art against even the most skilled fraudsters.
  • Condition and Security Monitoring: AI-driven analysis and IoT sensors provide actionable alerts about an artwork’s condition and environment.

Investors always need an edge

For collectors and family offices managing significant art investments, the benefits are profound and immediate:

  • Enhanced Security: Specialized monitoring tools go beyond standard home systems, offering peace of mind for any collector  and necessary protection  for high-value assets.
  • Investment Confidence: Comprehensive provenance and condition data empower smarter decisions and mitigate risk. The world’s best experts are now available without having to fly them around the world just to see an artwork in person.
  • Streamlined Estate Planning: Secure online art dossiers make documentation simple and sharing with trusted financial advisors safe and easy.

Art will be the next great Asset class, and here is how it will happen.

There’s no doubt that art will continue to grow as a financial asset, but in order to protect your art investments, you must future-proof your collection and establish an edge over more traditional buyers.  While this industry has been the last bastion of luddites, the digital transformation has begun and  it’s imperative to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation.

Family offices now have the opportunity to not only invest in art, but to ensure their collections are secure, transparent, and protected. After all, true value lies not just in the canvas but in the veracity of the story that supports it.
